Side-By-Side: Comparison of the Child Care & Development Block Grant Reauthorization Act of 2024 to Current Law

The Child Care & Development Block Grant (CCDBG) is the primary federal grant program that provides child care assistance to low-income working families with children under age 13. It plays a foundational role in ensuring families have access to affordable, quality child care, but it has not been reauthorized or updated in a decade.

Since CCDBG was last reauthorized in 2014, with strong bipartisan support, the needs of children and families have significantly changed, as has the child care landscape. Reauthorizing this program provides a key opportunity to ensure the  program can better meet the changing needs of families, providers, and the economy. It also gives Congress the opportunity to more fully address the ways in which CCDBG works with other federal early learning programs to best support states, communities, and families across the country.

In August 2024, Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) introduced the Child Care and Development Block Grant Reauthorization Act of 2024, which would make several improvements to CCDBG. Below is a side-by-side comparison of the current CCDBG next to the updates included in the recent CCDBG Reauthorization Act.
