FFYF Statement on Proposed Elimination of Head Start

Following the news that the proposed FY2026 budget would completely eliminate funding for Head Start, FFYF Executive Director Sarah Rittling released this statement:
“Last night, a leaked memo from the Office of Management and Budget showed the upcoming White House budget proposal to Congress will fully eliminate funding for Head Start and other critical family programs. This would be devastating for countless children and families across the country.
“We are calling on Congress to reject any proposal to defund Head Start. Lawmakers – many of whom have long shown support for the program – must act immediately to protect it.
“Working families in our nation urgently need more options for child care, not fewer. Head Start provides high-quality learning and care, nutrition, and medical services for young children and allows their parents to go to work. It serves as the only child care option for many rural areas, and sets children on a path for a better future. Eliminating Head Start would be catastrophic for the families and communities who rely on it and the repercussions would be felt for generations to come.
“There is no time to lose – every member of Congress must take a strong stand before the final draft of the budget is released to protect Head Start and ensure it can continue its vital work.”
