The First Five Things to Know About: the House Bipartisan Pre-K and Child Care Caucus

Resource November 1, 2024

Addressing the child care needs of families across America is a critical element to strengthening our communities and our economy. For years, the House Bipartisan Pre-K and Child Care Caucus has served as a forum to bring members from across the aisle together to:

  • Examine early education priorities and child care programs to gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of early childhood education and child care;
  • Explore best practice programs; and
  • Develop policy recommendations to improve and expand affordable and accessible  early education and child care.

Here are the first five things to know about the Bipartisan Pre-K and Child Care Caucus (including how to join):

The Bipartisan Pre-K and Child Care Caucus seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of child care and early learning and promote policy recommendations.. The caucus hosts events and briefings throughout the year to educate members on the importance of high-quality, accessible early education and child care for our nation’s children and working families. They facilitate important conversations around topics like appropriations funding for federal child care programs, ways to support working families in communities across the country, and opportunities to coordinate site visits to child care providers who are administering high-quality care.

The caucus is co-chaired by Representatives Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Suzanne Bonamici (D-WA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), and Ashley Hinson (R-IA). Together, they lead a bipartisan group of members in work to promote policy recommendations that improve and expand high-quality child care access in the United States.

Federal action on child care continues to be a key issue that Democrats and Republicans agree on. In fact, an overwhelming majority of voters (89%) want candidates to have a plan or policies ready to help working parents afford high-quality child care. This cuts across party lines, with 80% of Republicans, 88% of Independents, and 99% of Democrats.

The Members enjoy talking about the work. Here the First Five Things to Know about Rep. Bonamici,
Rep. Hinson, Rep. Castro, and Rep. Fitzpatrick. We also have recorded events featuring Reps. Bonamici and Hinson and with Reps. Castro and Fitzpatrick talking about policy, bipartisanship, and what gives them hope for the future.

They’ve also been active on the Hill. Along with meetings, site visits, and strategy sessions, Members also held events and kickoffs, attended briefings, and weighed in on updating provisions of the United States tax code to strengthen child care.
